On June 15, 2025, SMILE Canada was proud to host Ahlan Ottawa, a gathering created to welcome and connect Arabic-speaking newcomer families raising children and youth with disabilities. Held in Ottawa, this event provided a warm, supportive space for families to meet, share their experiences, and learn about local programs and resources available to them.

The afternoon featured interactive workshops, expert panels, and community conversations addressing the unique barriers newcomer families face in navigating services. From language barriers to long waitlists and a lack of culturally informed care, families had the opportunity to voice their challenges and connect directly with SMILE’s Service Navigation team for support.

While parents connected, children enjoyed fun activities, gifts, and games, with respite care available onsite to make sure families could fully participate. It was a beautiful reminder that creating accessible and inclusive spaces is about more than resources, it’s about connection.

Ahlan Ottawa was an opportunity to build on SMILE’s growing presence in the Ottawa region and our ongoing commitment to newcomer families across Canada. Thank you to all the families who joined us, and to our volunteers and service navigators for making the day so meaningful.
