On May 31, 2025, SMILE Canada was proud to partner with ASE Community Foundation for Black Canadians with Disabilities for THRIVE 2025, a meaningful hybrid event in Toronto centered on the experiences of Black immigrants and refugees with disabilities. This gathering created a much-needed space for families, advocates, and service providers to connect, share stories, and exchange resources.
The event focused on the often overlooked journey of Black disabled newcomers as they navigate systemic barriers to healthcare, education, employment, and community belonging in Canada. Through powerful panel discussions, attendees heard directly from speakers like Dr. Ihsan Fagiri and Rwan Muzamil, who reflected on the realities of displacement, xenophobia, and disability. Their stories were both moving and urgent, underscoring the need for culturally safe, accessible, and affirming services.
In addition to these conversations, the event offered opportunities for attendees to network, access resources, and take part in storytelling workshops that encouraged community-led advocacy. It was a space of warmth, resilience, and solidarity - one where people were not only heard but celebrated.
At SMILE, we know that meaningful support begins with listening. Events like THRIVE 2025 remind us of the importance of co-creating spaces that reflect the diversity of our communities while addressing the specific needs of racialized and disabled newcomers.
We are grateful to everyone who participated, shared their stories, and helped foster a space of care, advocacy, and connection.
