Every week, SMILE meets families who have fled conflict and hardship, arriving in Canada carrying more than just hope. Their children are living with complex medical conditions, developmental disabilities, and trauma that cannot wait for support.
Our team is seeing the need rise sharply. Families who are already struggling with navigating language barriers are now navigating hospitals, therapy waitlists, and systems that feel impossible to access alone. At SMILE, we support when no one else can. But right now, the need is outpacing our capacity.
Bereavement Support: For newcomer families caring for children with complex disabilities, the emotional and financial pressure is immense. In the tragic event that a child passes away, families often have no extended support network in Canada.
Hygiene Essentials for Children: Many children with disabilities—especially those with mobility, developmental, or medical challenges—continue to need diapers and hygiene supplies well beyond toddler age. For newcomer families living with financial hardship, the cost of large-sized diapers, wipes, and incontinence products is overwhelming and not fully covered by public programs.
Specialized Feeding Needs: Some children with disabilities rely on specialized formula, thickened liquids, or adaptive feeding equipment because they cannot swallow safely or digest solid foods. These products are often extremely expensive and difficult for newcomer families to access, especially during the first months in Canada.
Winter Essentials: Many newcomer families arrive in Canada with no winter clothing, and the cost of proper coats, boots, hats, and gloves—especially for children with disabilities who require additional layers or accessible clothing—can be unaffordable.
Our goal is to raise $25,000 by December 15 to support families across Canada who rely on SMILE to get through the winter season. Every donation has a direct, tangible impact, helping families provide essential care for their children.
